Being in control of your kayak at all times is something that everyone desires. You may ask how to turn your kayak? Another question is what is the correct way to paddle your kayak. Knowing the basic kayak paddle techniques strokes will help you have a great adventure.

The first paddle stroke is- Forward stroke

This is one of the most critical paddle stroke in kayaking that you must know, for a better kayaking experience. Most of the time, you will use forward strokes; it requires a lot of power compared to other paddle strokes. As the names suggest, this stroke will help to move forward. This stroke requires you use your back muscles and core to do the forward strokes.

Here, you need to push and pull the blade in water counter-clockwise. Your elbows must be close to your body as much as possible. You will have to keep your body in an upright position to gain efficiency and maintain balance.

The second is – Reverse stroke

Reverse stroke is used when you want to move back. This basic paddle stroke is essential for your safety in case of an emergency can be able to reverse and escape. Same strokes are followed as for the case of forwarding strokes but in a reverse manner. The blade needs to be completely immersed in water on the hip side. And try to rotate the torso as the blade moves in water in your front and then slowly pull the blade out water.

The third basic stroke is – Sweep stroke

A sweeping stroke becomes essential when you want to turn your boat to a specific direction. Under a sweep stroke, you will have to continuously make forward strokes in the same side of the boat to make it turn towards that direction.

A sweeping stroke is performed by extending your arm to pull the blade in water that is near your feet. You need to do this in one on the opposite side which you want to turn.

The forth stroke is- Draw stroke

The basic paddle stroke called Draw strokes are performed when you want to move your boat sideways. It is essential when you want to push yourself to another kayak.

Draw strokes are performed by rotating the blade in a horizontal manner and with the tip touching the water. With the help of your hand, pull the blade to your direction, keeping the tip of the blade in water. Several draw strokes are required to move the boat sideways.

The fifth stroke is-Kayak spin

This is another kayak paddle technique used to move your boat in water smoothly. A turn is employed when one makes cycles in stationary water. A kayak spin is done by doing an alteration of forwarding step in one side, and then you do a reverse stroke on the other side.

When one does a forward stroke, your body will automatically move to move the other hand and you will require to do a reverse stroke.
